Typography 2

The following is some of my work from my Typography 2 class (11/20/03-2/12/04). Typography 1 taught the history of text and proper usage of it. Typography 2 is just projects that involve lots of text.

Book Cover

Original format: Photoshop PSD, 12½x8 inches, RGB mode, 300 dpi

Assignment: Design a book cover in either Photoshop or Illustrator. Must be created the way professional book covers are (with the back, spine, and cover altogether as a single image).

Ramblings: I scanned a whole bunch of old photos from my grandmother's archive, so I decided to have the book cover based on that. So yes, that's some of my family from the olden days of Cuba that you see there. In the group photo, the little girl is my mom, the woman laying down is my grandmother, the man is my grandfather (died from lung cancer, he smoked), the old woman to the left wearing black is my great grandmother (died from old age, 104), and I have no clue who's the old woman in the middle. The woman in the fancy dress on the back cover is my grandmother again. Why is she dressing like a queen? Well, from what I could gather with her really strong accent when she attempts to speak English, that's what women in her woman club did whenever they won some type of vote or contest, which took place once a month. This book cover was, of course, one of the best in the class. ^_^ The book covers of most people were really bad. x_x Poor use of text and graphics galore. I drew the two logos and the Cuban flag in Illustrator.

Letter Poster

Original format: Illustrator AI, 12x18 inches, CMYK mode, 300 dpi

Assignment: Design a poster with the letter you're assigned with.
- It must display your letter in at least 5 different fonts, upper case and lower case. You need to somehow put the names of each font in such a way that the viewer can understand which font is which.
- It must display at least 3 different older versions of your letter. You need to somehow put the name of each in such a way that the viewer can understand where they came from.
- It must include body copy of 50-200 words of the history of your letter.

Ramblings: In other words, we had to design an educational poster for the letter we were assigned with. The teacher assigned each student with their own letter of the alphabet, so at the student art show he can put each poster side by side to have the whole alphabet. My poster was the only one that got a "Oh! Who drew that?" reaction. Everyone else did the same bland cookie cutter design based on the example the teacher had on the assignment paper. I stepped out of the box and did a semi-complex drawing in Illustrator! =D
